Treatment of Type II Diabetes

As David S.H. Bell, MB, FACP, FACE of Birmingham, AL could tell you, type II diabetes is the much more common of the two types of diabetes. With this type, which outnumbers insulin dependent diabetes nearly 9 to 1, the diabetic is non-insulin dependent and has lots of different symptoms. Some symptoms might include sexual impotence, burning sensations, yeast infections, abnormal thirst, abnormal hunger, fatigue, blurred vision and increased urination.

Type II Diabetes usually affects adults, and does so for a variety of reasons. These reasons include obesity, genetics, and many other elements. There are many different remedies for Type II diabetes that a diabetic should consider.

Diet and Exercise

One of the prime methods to help control your non-insulin dependent diabetes is to eat a proper diet and exercise regularly. Keeping the best weight for your age and height is very important to correct your diabetes. Being overweight is one thing that will make your diabetes worse and initiating and keeping on a balanced is one of the best ways to make medication unnecessary and can sometimes stop diabetes altogether. You will want to implement a diet that is not only healthy, but also one that will help your body deal with the insulin and how it is used.

A good exercise plan not only helps you control your weight, but also helps you use insulin.

Medication

Medication is necessary when exercise and dieting is not helping to control the sugar levels within your blood. On the other hand, if you are not implementing any type of diet or exercise program into your daily life, you will have to take prescription medicines. There are many different types of medication that your doctor may prescribe. For example, oral medications such as Meglitinides, Thiazolidinediones, Alpha-Glucosidase, and Sulfonylureas are frequently implemented.

However, if your oral medications do not work or you have some sort of reaction to them, your doctor will likely prescribe an injection type of insulin instead. The majority of people try to treat their diabetes in other ways, without the use of injections or other medication.

Natural Remedies

There are quite a few natural remedies that may aid you in treating diabetes, these remedies include home remedies, as well as supplements and vitamins. Before you choose to treat your Type II diabetes with natural remedies, you want to research all options and make the right choice for your health needs with your doctor.

Choosing the right treatment of your Type II diabetes demands seeing all options and alternativesavailable to you and choosing the that is logically right and works best to help control your diabetes.

Natural Remedies for Depression

Depression is a fairly common psychiatric problem, which is characterized by a symptoms and signs including depressed mood and other emotional problems, loss of confidence, weight loss, and the decreased ability to have any enjoyment in almost anything. Depression torments between 7% and 19% of the people in the US, with more than thirteen million American adults being diagnosed with depression each year. Major depression causes more than 60% of suicides every year, unfortunately because only about a third of depressed patients access medical attention.

Although the exact cause of depression is still under investigation, there are many well known natural remedies for depressive disorders. The first natural remedy that can improve your outlook and drecrease your depression is a good diet, which actually plays a huge role in the seratonin levels in the brain. A diet that limits sweets, pies, sweet chocolate, sugar loaded sodas, candy, ice cream and other foods packed with sugar can actually diminish the effects of depression, because sweets are able to temporarily increase mood by increasing blood sugar levels. But, once the glucose level drops, moods tend to be even lower and cause those suffering from depression to enter depressive periods. By avoiding peaks in blood sugar levels, major depressive moods can actually be prevented. Avoiding coffee and other drinks like 180, Ol' Glory, VitaminWater Energy Citrus, Diablo, Rip It Energy Fuel as well as dart and Nepals own organic coffee espressos that are high in caffeine can also be beneficial. The same goes for any alcoholic beverages. Caffeine and alcohol can both worsen mood, by providing a temporary period of happiness that is usually followed by depression. Those with depression should focus on consuming foods that are able to trigger serotonin production, such as foods rich in B vitamins and magnesium. Nuts, green vegetables, and some varieties of fish can be beneficial, since they can actually trigger a good mood without being followed by a state of depression.

St. John's Wort has been used throughout the world for treating mild depression. Although it has not been shown to be useful for treating severe depression cases, it has been shown to actually increase synaptic levels of biogenic amines, such as nor epinephrine. Various studies have been performed, and have shown that St. John's Wort has actually been as effective as various prescription medications for depression. When used by patients diagnosed with mild depression, it can relieve many of the symptoms, included but not limited to extreme mood changes, loss of appetite, insomnia, and negative feelings. Exercise is one of the most helpful natural remedies for depression, since it can lessen some of the symptoms while keeping the body in good shape. Exercise has been shown to improve overall mood, increase energy, and reduce the effects of sleep loss in depressed patients. Exercise has been effective in treating mild to moderate depression, but may take longer than prescription medications to show results.

Seasonal affective disorder, a form of depression that only occurs during certain parts of the year, has been shown to be treated by exposure to artificial and natural sunlight. It is used as an alternative to prescription depression medications, and works by regulating the body clock. Exposure to artificial and natural sunlight can actually trigger chemical changes in the brain, such as serotonin and melatonin production which can increase overall mood and sleeping patterns.

Depression is a serious medical condition, but mild cases can easily be improved with the help of natural depression remedies. Prescription medication are plagued by possible serious risk factors and side effects, but using natural methods can improve the medical condition without any similar problems. Changing regular activities such as diet, exercise, and even social activities can help to improve depression periods decreasing your depressed mood and other emotional problemsand difficulty making decisions, making those diagnosed with depression able to live a happier life.

Diabetes and Kidney Disease

Diabetes and Kidney Disease Diabetes is a potentially crippling condition that affects kidneys, stomach and every other organ in the body. It is a problem in which the body is unable to produce or properly use insulin. Insulin, a hormone that is necessary for converting starches, sugar and other food into energy. The thing that leads to diabetes is unknown and there is no known cure. However, effective control may be achieved under a physician's care. Endocrinologists are specialists that treat diabetes. They are easy to find in most areas. Here are some examples: David Alster, MD of Tucson AZ, Dr Sophie Jamal of Toronto, Sarah Harper, MD of Washington, DC, Shahid Athar, MD, FACP, FACE of Indianapolis, IN, Michael Rayner Davis, MD, FACP, FACE of Mobile, AL In 2005, it was estimated that there were 20.8 million children and adults who are afflicted with the disease. That is pretty close to 7% of the population. Of all of those, 14.6 million people were diagnosed, but 6.2 million people were thought to have diabetes but they had not seen a doctor. In addition, neaerly 54 million folks are pre-diabetic with one and a half million new disease found in people age 20 and older, emerging each year. Diabetes is the most common cause of renal disease. For a fact, high blood pressure and diabetes are the primary causes of kidney disease. This is responsible for about 70 percent of kidney failure with diabetes accounting of 44 percent of kidney failure cases. The early stages of kidney disease have no symptoms . It injures your body and eventually when it is finally detected, the injury is so far advanced that it quite often is too far to prevent kidney failure. Once your kidneys fail, you have two options: dialysis or kidney transplant. If you do not receive either of these, you will die. How Diabetes causes Kidney Disease When your kidneys are functioning as they should, the glomeruli (tiny filters that are in the kidneys) keep proteins inside of your blood. Protein is essential for quite a few functions inside of your body and are required to keep you healthy. Diabetes makes an increased concentration of glucose in the blood which damages the glomeruli. This means that they can't maintain the protein in the body and it is leaked into the urine from the kidneys. When the kidneys are damaged they no longer function properly and do not cleanse our extra fluids as they should. When this occurs, the fluids and waste build up in the body instead of being secreted through urine. As this continues, the worse the damage becomes until the kidneys eventually fail. The Progression of Renal Disease It often can take years for diabetic kidney disease to develop. Some experience hyperfiltration in the first few years of their diabetes. This means that the glomeruli actually function at a much higher capacity than normal. Once the damage starts, though, it is progressive. While developing kidney disease, they will have a blood protein named albumin that starts to flow into the urine in small amounts. At this time, the glomeruli are actually functioning normally. The progression of the disease leads to more protein leaking into the urine and the glomeruli begin to fail as the filtering begins to drop. Waste is kept in the blood because of the filtration failure. Finally, the kidneys cease to function. How to Prevent Kidney Problems if you have Diabetes Once you have diabetes, you can usually prevent kidney problems. Take these suggestions to keep your kidneys healthy: * Control your blood sugar by maintaining a healthy diet and a good exercise regimen * Take your medication as your doctor has directed * Have your physician test your urine routinely for kidney problems * If testing shows that you do have kidney problems, look into medications such as angiotensin II receptor blockers that can help keep your kidneys healthy. A diagnosis of diabetes does not have to automatically mean kidney disease. As long as you adequately treat your condition, manage it well and follow your endocronologist's orders, there is no reason that you can't live a long, healthy, happy life - without kidney disease. Build Muscle and Burn Fat With A New Routine

Starting a new exercise routine? Finally going to get in shape - or get back in shape. Start off by planning a well-rounded routine to build muscle, burn fat, and increase cardiovascular health. Of course this is what your plan already is. But have you written down your plan? If you don't make a plan, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

A lot of people just get in and do an "intuitive" workout, and while that does work for some people who are tuned in to their bodies needs, most of us need a plan - or a map of how we are going to get from couch potato to gym stud. You probably thought you'd just go in and lift weights to build muscle - do some bench pressing and bicep curls, then jump on the treadmill and jog a while. If that's your plan, your plan sucks. If you are going to put the time in at the gym, make use of the time.

This time when you go back to the gym, try to include these three elements: Core Training, Effective Cardio, and Useful Weight Training.

Core training is something that most people, especially guys because it seems kind of girly - it's not. Core training can be hard-core (pun intended) and you want to train your core hard. There are so many exercises out there, so just do a search and find some exercises that you think you can do and start doing them. Don't worry about what you perceive other people are thinking about you. Don't worry if some guys look at you funny - they probably can't do it. Besides, are you there to impress them? If you are, you have some mental exercises you need to work on too.

Effective cardio is what you need to do - not just jump on the treadmill and run for a half hour - you can do that outside and get fresh air. If you are going to use the machines - push yourself. Get on the stair-climber and push yourself, or do 30-second sprints on the treadmill, jog for 2 minutes, then do sprints again. Don't just go along at a comfortable pace when doing cardio whether indoors or outside. Unless you are training to be a long distance runner, make your cardio about pushing up your heart rate and expanding your lungs - this is what is going to get you to a better resting heart hear and an increased metabolism (your fat furnace will be burning strong).

Useful weight training means training so that you are going to build muscle that is balanced. Again, unless you are training for something special, like a specific sport, you do not have to concentrate a ton on things like your chest or biceps. Balance it out and be strong all over. Make sure you pay attention to your legs too. So many people skip them and end up with a big upper body and chicken legs - it really is funny to notice in the gym. Another thing is concentrating on your abs. Until you have a low fat content don't focus much time on ab specific exercises because you won't see your abs till you lose the fat. Doing your core exercises will take care of all the abdominal exercises you need.

Okay, that's it. Make a plan, do effective exercising, stick to it and you will start seeing great results in no time flat. Build muscle, burn fat, and be healthy.

Gratitude Helps Depression

Depression is a feeling of helplessness it is a feeling of despondency that can be caused by inactivity, a deteriorating economic state, unemployment, sickness (your own or that of a loved one), a spouse or friend walking away from your life, any factor that sends the equilibrium of the mind into negative territory or even hormones. In other words, depression is what optomism is not.

Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds. ~Theodore Roosevelt

Depression first strangles and then, if unheeded, goes on to completely destroy positive thinking. It sends the positive attitude process on a downward spiral, and places the depressed person in a zombie-like stupor. A depressed person slows down at work, becomes counter-productive, does not enjoy family life, ignores or avoids his friends and relations and remains in a condition of continuing dissatisfaction. That was the emotional position a depressed person is hampered on the physical front too because negative thinking depresses the immune system. Additionally, a depressed person suffers from fatigue and keeps thinking that he is affected by some disease.

Depression has to be treated as quickly as possible. The first thing that a depressed man may do is to reach out for anti-depressant pills, which give a temporary relief from depression. However, depression almost always stems out of a negative thought process and the best way to battle it is a positive mental attitude. Yes, a depressed person needs to start thinking positively to ward off depression, and one of the greatest factors that can usher in positive thought is the feeling of gratitude.

Gratitude, or thankfulness, is an appreciation of a benefit received. Expressing gratitude makes one feel good and also tanks him up with positive vibes, and he begins to feel upbeat and full of encouraging energy. The body will be energized and actually healthier. The big question, however, is what to be grateful for and to whom to express our thanks.

Well, the answer to that question lies inside each of us. If we take a look at our own lives, we will find innumerable instances that we can be grateful for. For instance:

We can thank the lord for giving us a good night's rest, for a great sunny day and for the birds chirping in our backyard. If we have friends to fall back on, we must thank them for just being there for us. If we are healthy, we can thank nature for giving us a robust body constitution; if we are unwell, we can thank the doctors for bringing us out of our condition.

These were just a few examples but, you will find many reasons to feel grateful towards Nature and towards your family/friends once you start introspecting your life. So, go right ahead and do that, and when you discover the little things that add that sparkle to your existence, humbly express your gratitude to them.

The positive attitude expressed will promote positive thinking, which in turn will drive away the darkness that depression has exploded into your mind. Gratitude will drive away the fears planted by depression and sprinkle your mind with good cheer, and once you are cheerful, the world will be wonderful. Forever.

To Do: 1) Make a list of 10 things that you are thankful for "right now". 2) Put up a sign reminding you to make another list every day. 3) Add to your list during the day every time you start having any negative thought. 4) Save your lists in a scrapbook. 5) Read your scrapbook if you are having trouble remembering anything you are thankful for.

Hypertension Causes, Prevention and Treatment

Tom Howell of New Orleans couldn't believe it. Dr. Reid at the New Orleans Urgent Care Center broke the bad news. He had high blood pressure.

Tom had a good excuse. After all, as an advertising manager in Schlitz Brewing, he certainly had his share of stress. And, let's not even talk about the cigarette.

According to Dr. Reid just being male was a major factor. The fact that he was 45 certainly didn't help.

Unfortunately, arterial hypertension rarely causes any symptoms until it has caused arteriosclerosis. In fact, high blood pressure can be incredibly severe before there are any symptoms.

Your blood pressure goes up and down throughout the day. If you swim a few laps your pressure will go up. Even if you just see a violent scene on television you will see a rise in your blood pressure.

If you took your blood pressure right after that, it would read high, but not be important.

Things you eat, drink and smoke can also increase your blood pressure. Caffeine drinks like coffee orenergy drinks will do the same. Nicotine from chewing tobacco stimulates the heart to increase your pressure as well.

You may think that alcohol relaxes you, but the long term effects of all those alcohol, cocktails, and liquers drinks take their toll as well.

Spending too much time in your favorite recliner instead of getting some exercise increases your chances of blood pressure problems.

Fortunately, there are many places you can get your blood pressure checked today. Many stores and pharmacies have automatic blood pressure machines you can use. Just sit down for a couple minutes and get it checked. If you pressure is up slightly three different times, you should see a doctor. If it is over about 160 just once, you should also seek medical advice.

Rest makes your blood pressure go down. Because of that, the best time to take your blood pressure is after a peaceful period.

But, back to Tom. His family history made a big difference in his high blood pressure. He had a father who died at age 56 of a heart attack. Genetics can really increase your chances of needing treatment for high blood pressure.

Fortunately, these days, there is a lot you can do to decrease high blood pressure.

Changing your diet will definitely help. You will improve your blood pressure as well as your overall health by increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables. You should get regular exercise, lots of water and a good night's sleep. If you can stop using tobacco and limit or cut out your alcohol altogether that will help a great deal.

If you don't completely normalize your blood pressure by those means, many different medications are available today that will help. You will want to find a physician that you can work with on keeping your pressure normal.

Type 1 Diabetes: Info You Should Know

An Introduction to Type 1 Diabetes: The facts you should know

Historically thought Historically considered to be a fairly uncommon condition, Type I diabetes affects about one out of every 250 people, both children and adults, living in the USA today. Although the word "juvenile" has long been the appellation of this type of the disease, as in Type I juvenile onset diabetes, the illness may actually occur at any age, and appears equally among both boys and girls.

There are many hundreds things that can go wrong with your body. Consider this short list:

11 beta hydroxylase deficiency - Cholestasis, progressive familial intrahepatic - Acute megakaryoblastic leukemia - Elejalde syndrome - Blue rubber bleb nevus - Antiphospholipid syndrome - Encephalomyelitis - Chromosome 10, trisomy 10q - Cholesterol ester storage disease - Becker disease - Cerebral gigantism

Fortunately, even most doctors have not heard of some of these. But even though it is considered fairly uncommon, you probably know someone with Type I Diabetes.

Symptoms

While the signs and symptoms of Type I diabetes tend to be subtle in most cases, if not treated, they can with time become quite severe. Some of the most common symptoms include:

Blurry vision - Increased thirst - Increased hunger, even just after eating - Frequent urination - Frequent skin, vaginal, or urinary tract infections - Tingling in the hands or feet - Heavy or labored breathing for no apparent reason

Some of the more serious signs associated with Type I diabetes that demand an immediate need for medical attention may include:

Abdominal pain Confusion Shaking, trembling Fruity or sweet smelling breath Rapid breathing and heart rate Loss of consciousness, rarely in extreme cases

Causes

Scientists still aren't aware of many of the factors leading one to have Type I diabetes, although they do know that a susceptibility to the condition may be inherited from one or both parents. Researchers have discovered that juvenile onset diabetes may also be caused by environmental factors that causes an unexpected reaction within the immune system. However, they are unsure as to the origins of these possible triggers.

Diagnosis

For an accurate diagnosis of Type I diabetes, your doctor must check for high blood sugar levels by performing a blood test, or also testing for the presence of glucose or ketones in the urine. Currently, there is no way to test for impending Type I diabetes, or a way to prevent one from developing this type of diabetes.

Treatment

There are many people, of all ages, who enjoy long, healthy lives despite having Type I diabetes. It's imperative to keep blood sugar levels within their normal range, which may be achieved by eating the right foods, exercise, and the right insulin therapy consistentlyone or more times a day. Anyone with this form of the disease must have insulin injections in order to properly maintain their blood sugar level, which will also have to be tested regularly.

Without treatment, Type I diabetes may evolve into several serious conditions, some of which may be life-threatening. Kidney failure is a fairly frequent complication in those with the disease with a condition known as nephropathy. Other possible complications include retinopathy, which causes a loss of vision, heart disease, poor blood circulationand digestive problems which may also result without medical treatment.

Although a serious problem, juvenile onset diabetes is a condition that can still be successfully managed with the right medical care.
